This repertoire of carved forms is referred to as "Okir" in Maranao or "Ukkil" in Tausug, meaning “carved”. A folk motif that can be found in Maranao and Muslim-influenced artwork, especially in the Southern Philippines, and in some part of South East Asia.

Design

Its use of geometric pattern stylized representations of floral and animal forms derives from the orthodox Islamic prohibition of realistic representations of humans and animals. Designs can be seen in the regions architecture, furniture, clothing and decorative objects.
